Refinishing Process

What is the refinishing process?

We use the highest quality professional materials available.  We use a two step bonding method that ensures far superior adhesion of the polyurethane finish for one to two generations of use and lifetime.  We use Kohler colors.  Kohler White is pure snow white.  The final result is a smooth, high gloss wet-look similiar to the look on the lid of your toilet tank top as far as shine.

  • We start by setting up a powerful ventillation system that ensures you that all overspray and fumes will be evacuated out of the bathroom to the exterior of your residence.  You do not need to leave the premises at all.
  • All existing caulking and builtup soap residue is removed.
  • The overflow faceplate on the tub is removed and any other chrome on the fixture that the customer wants replaced.
  • A thorough commercial strength cleaner/degreaser and deglosser is applied to porcelain and ceramic tile to prep the surface for bonding.  (Bonding step #1).
  • If there is rust, it is killed three ways! First with sanding, next with a special rust primer/killer,  which alone,  will prevent the rust from ever coming back.   Thirdly, a separate bonding primer, applied later,  has rust inhibitors in it also.
  • All chips, indentations, cracks, scratches and pittings are filled and sanded smooth to the surface.
  • Paper masking is applied around the perimeter of the fixture to be refinished.  Drop cloths are placed on all horizontal surfaces in the room.
  • Any new chrome, brass, brushed nickel trim such as drains, overflow faceplates, spouts, water knobs and showerarms and showerheads will be installed if ordered.
  • A final cleaning is done on the surface.
  • A sticky cheesecloth is done on the fixture to remove any particles of dust.
  • The project is illuminated with 250 watt lamps to highlight the surface.
  • The latest state of the art primer is applied providing the second bonding capability that gives it that superior adhesion you expect.
  • Any Integral Slip Resistant Surfaces, ISRS, if ordered, will be installed permanently into the refinshed surface on the bottom of the tub.
  • A final polyurethane topcoat glaze is applied in the color of your choice.  The result is a smooth, high gloss "Wet-Look".  We use Kohler colors and the Kohler White is pure, snow-white.
  • We remove all masking and dropcloths, and clean the room.
  • We recaulk the tub with the highest quality silicon caulking that matches the shiny gloss of the glaze and is highly flexible.  It will not crack and is the most resistant to mildew of all caulks.
  • The warranty is left with full detail cleaning instructions. The tub, shower, countertop or sink can be used  in 24 hours.

How much time does it take?

Most projects take one day or less, such as:  tubs and sinks, small countertops, etc. Showers will take a day, entire bathrooms 1-2 days and kitchen countertops and sinks 1-2 days.

What is the cure time?

24 hours on the polyurethane glaze.

Do I need to buff the fixture?
